Nottingham Forest has received a penalty of four points for violating the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR).
The club was sent to a separate committee in January for breaking the allowed limit of losses in the past three seasons, including the 2022/2023 season.
The deduction drops Nuno Espirito Santo’s side down into the relegation zone of England’s top flight, with Luton climbing a place to 17th.
This punishment is in response to a similar violation by Everton earlier this season, where their initial ten-point penalty was reduced to six after their appeal.
If the Forest appeals, the case must be resolved by April 15th.
Every Premier League team is evaluated for their compliance with the PSR, and each team is permitted to have a deficit of up to £105m throughout three seasons, after accounting for certain deductible expenses.
The City Ground team falls somewhat short of this, but are subject to varying restrictions due to spending two of the three seasons in the Championship before their return to the premier league.
Under the ownership of Evangelos Marinakis, Forest made significant investments in order to maintain their position in the Premier League and were able to successfully avoid relegation last season.
The Premier League has made efforts to accelerate the process of punishing violations of PSR, enabling sanctions such as point deductions to be imposed in the same season as the offense is reported.
Everton may potentially face additional penalties as they were charged in January, along with Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Manchester City were faced with 115 charges in February of last year and it is anticipated that this case will take a considerable amount of time to resolve.
This marks the inaugural occasion where two Premier League teams have received point deductions in a single season.
On Saturday, Forest earned a point against Luton, their rivals in the fight to avoid relegation, at Kenilworth Road.
“Let’s wait and see with the decision,” Nuno said after the 1-1 draw. “Whatever happens, we keep on going and fighting. Nine games to go, we have nine finals.”
