A 36-year-old male is currently in severe condition following a physical confrontation that escalated into violence inside a subway car in Brooklyn. He accidentally injured himself with his own firearm.
The altercation occurred when a 32-year-old man boarded a northbound A train in Brooklyn and was immediately accosted by a 36-year-old man who was already on the train.
According to the New York Police Department’s chief of transit, Michael Kemper, witnesses reported the 36-year-old as being confrontational and hostile towards the new passenger.
The situation escalated into violence rapidly.
In the end, the younger man was able to take the older man’s gun and proceeded to shoot him multiple times, including in the head. This information was reported by the police.
This is the complete information we have on the disturbing incident that occurred on the subway:
The incident
At approximately 4:45pm on Thursday, March 14th, a 32-year-old male boarded the A train heading north.
A 36-year-old man who was already onboard approached him and was accused of behaving aggressively and provocatively towards him.
The dispute turned into a physical confrontation.
The police reported that the 36-year-old person “showed” a knife or razor blade, but later set it aside.
During a heated argument, the 36-year-old man took out a gun from his jacket, according to Mr. Kemper.
The chief of transit stated that the older man approached the younger man in an intimidating manner and began shouting at him, resulting in another physical altercation between the two.
“In the midst of the altercation, the 32-year-old removed the gun from the 36-year-old and proceeded to fire several shots at the older individual, ultimately causing injury,” stated the speaker.
According to ABC7, a 36-year-old individual sustained two gunshot wounds to the right side of their face, one to their neck, and one to their chest.
According to Mr Kemper, shots were fired as the train approached the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station. The police on duty at the platform heard the gunfire and promptly intervened.
More details revealed
During a second press conference, law enforcement disclosed that a female, thought to be accompanying the 32-year-old male, was seen on camera using a sharp object to injure the 36-year-old male during the confrontation.
According to law enforcement officials, a video clip circulating on the internet depicts a woman hovering near two men engaged in a brawl. The woman is believed to have taken out a sharp object from her purse and stabbed the person who was instigating the fight.
After that, the 36-year-old can be heard questioning, “Did you wound me?” before seemingly retrieving a firearm from his own jacket and stating, “You harmed me?”
The inquiry is still in progress.
On Friday, later in the day, NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey announced that a video was received by the police showing that the 36-year-old did not pay the fare when he entered the Nostrand Avenue station in Brooklyn, just 10 minutes before the incident took place.
Rattled train passengers
According to Mr. Kemper, the other individuals in the vehicle were unharmed.
A video shared online depicts a crowded vehicle with scared passengers cowering in fear.
A passenger informed ABC7 that upon exiting, they heard three or four gunshots followed by doors opening and everyone rushing out.
“I didn’t believe I would reach home safely. I was surrounded by everything, just like you are in front of me. That’s where I was,” another commuter shared with the media.
An ABC reporter recorded distressing footage of passengers on the A train reacting to the incident. The video showed a large group of people crouching down in the crowded car while authorities on the platform rushed to the scene.
A person’s voice can be heard shouting: “Shut the door! Shut the door!”
According to Janno Lieber, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority chair, it is unacceptable for someone to carry a gun and instigate a confrontation on the subway.
According to the authorities, the alleged perpetrator is actually the victim in this case. However, Mr. Lieber argues that the true victims are the innocent bystanders on the train who were traumatized by the presence of a gun.
New York Gov Kathy Hochul issued a statement following the incident, saying, “Like all New Yorkers, I’m horrified by yesterday’s shooting on the A Train. No subway rider should commute in fear that they’ll be the victim of a shooting or slashing – and we’re taking coordinated action to keep straphangers safe.”
The governor emphasized the need for collaboration among all levels of government to address the recent increase in subway crime. He stated that by working with Mayor Adams, the police, prosecutors, and transit officials, they will ensure the safety of all New Yorkers.
According to former transit officer and current Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, ensuring safety in the subway is crucial for public safety. He believes that involving the entire criminal justice system will further improve our efforts in keeping people safe. While overall crime rates have decreased in the city, the subway remains an essential mode of transportation for many New Yorkers to reach their jobs, schools, and families.
The statement further expressed the importance of ensuring their safety through all means possible.
is that they rented the car together and
split the cost.
The information we have regarding the individuals involved is that they jointly leased the vehicle and split the expenses.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two men or the woman reportedly involved.
On Friday afternoon, Mr. Maddrey stated that he is unable to confirm whether the 36-year-old has a criminal record due to the ongoing investigation.
It is uncertain if the individuals involved were acquainted prior to the incident, but law enforcement asserts that this is not the case.
According to authorities, the individual found with a gunshot injury to the head is 36 years old and currently in critical condition since Thursday evening.
He was taken to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and had surgery there.
The 32-year-old suspect was detained by detectives and the weapon was found at the location.
It is uncertain what specific charges he may face, if any. According to Mr. Kemper, it has not yet been determined whether the 32-year-old will be charged or if his actions will be seen as self-defense.
The spokesperson for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office stated on March 15th to The Independent that the shooting that occurred in a crowded subway car was alarming and disturbing. The investigation is still ongoing, but based on the current evidence, it appears that the shooter acted in self-defense and therefore no criminal charges will be filed against them.
It is uncertain at this time if the woman who purportedly stabbed the 36-year-old will face any charges.
A reduction in shooting incidents in NYC
The NYPD recently reported a 15.4% decrease in subway crime in February compared to the same time last year.
The NYPD credited the decline in transit-related crime to their choice of adding 1,000 law enforcement officers per day to the subway system.
Furthermore, Ms. Hochul recently disclosed that 750 National Guard personnel working in the transportation network will be dispatched to support the police. She believes this effort will help prevent crime on the subway and that the presence of these individuals will increase passenger security.
However, in recent months, there have been multiple high-profile shootings in the subway system. For example, in January, an individual was shot and killed while attempting to intervene in a physical altercation between two other passengers on a train in Manhattan.
In February, a shooting took place at the Mount Eden Avenue subway station in the Bronx, resulting in one death and five injuries. According to the NYPD, the perpetrator is currently their primary target.
In February, a man who was 45 years of age received a gunshot wound and passed away while on the southbound D train near the 182-183 Street station in the Bronx.
After the incident on March 14th, authorities stressed that this was only one occurrence out of the “countless” individuals who used the subway on that particular day.
