Versace has recently revealed Irish performer Cillian Murphy as their newest ambassador for their fashion campaign.
The individual, 47 years of age, who played the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist, in a war biographical film, will be the face of the advertisement, dressed in select items from the men’s Versace Icons collection.
On April 3rd, the campaign will be launched worldwide, marking Murphy’s debut as the face of the Italian luxury fashion brand.
“I am delighted to have Cillian become a part of the Versace team. He is an exceptionally talented actor and his Oscar win is well-deserved,” stated Donatella Versace, the chief creative officer at Versace, in an interview with WWD. “His presence and captivating performance in front of the camera truly brings Versace to life.”
Murphy chose to wear a unique black Atelier Versace suit to the 96th Academy Awards in Hollywood on March 10th. According to the brand’s Instagram post, the suit included a wool tweed jacket with contrasting silk lapels, a formal silk shirt with pleated front detail and hidden buttons, and tailored mohair wool pants with a large silk waistband.
Stylist Rose Forde, who assisted in creating Murphy’s image during the film’s promotion and awards, shared that it was a tribute to the label’s history. In an interview with Vogue, she mentioned, “We drew inspiration from various Versace styles from the ’90s.”
Murphy accepted the award for best actor, while Oppenheimer also won best picture, best supporting actor, best director, best original score, best cinematography and best film editing.
This marks Murphy’s sixth team effort with British-American director Christopher Nolan. He has also had roles in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dunkirk.
The performer hailing from Douglas, Cork, was also featured in the BBC show Peaky Blinders, which follows a gang in Birmingham during the aftermath of World War I.
Last month, at Milan Fashion Week, Versace presented their latest autumn/winter collection for 2024. Among the models was Solange Knowles’ son, Daniel Julez Smith Jr.
The “wild” theme of the Versace collection features disrupted tailoring, deconstructed prints, and shredded Atelier Versace fabrics that are carefully hand-woven into new materials.
During that time, Versace stated, “This compilation embodies both a rebellious nature and a gentle spirit. The woman is a well-behaved individual with a passionate side. She exudes sophistication but also sensuality. Do not underestimate her! The man is her perfect match, a bashful intellectual. Together, they are defying conventions in order to create their own.”
In addition, Versace revealed that their designs will now include a smaller version of their iconic Medusa symbol, known as Medusa ’95.
