Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak emerged as the hero in their victory against Inter Milan in the Champions League last 16, securing their spot in the quarter-finals after a tense penalty shootout.
Inter, who reached the final of last year’s competition, went ahead at the Wanda Metropolitano through Federico Dimarco, but Diego Simeone’s team showed their usual never-say-die spirit.
Antoine Griezmann quickly tied the game and a goal in the final minutes by Memphis Depay forced extra time for the last-16 showdown. Penalties were needed to determine the winner.
Following Oblak’s successful blocks on shots from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, Inter’s team captain Lautaro Martinez missed his attempt from the 12-yard mark, causing the LaLiga team to advance to the quarter-finals.
On February 20, Inter barely defeated Atletico with a 1-0 win at the San Siro. They managed to withstand Atletico’s early pressure and took the lead after 33 minutes.
A clever play by the team led to the first goal, as captain Martinez dropped back while Nicolo Barella made a swift run on the left. He then passed it back to Dimarco who shot it past Oblak.
The home crowd were stunned, but Atletico responded within two minutes through Griezmann’s first goal since January 18.
Koke returned the ball to the field and when Inter defender Benjamin Pavard attempted to clear it, he accidentally sent it right to Griezmann who skillfully turned and shot the ball into the corner for his 19th goal of the season.
Atletico Madrid’s squad was in need of a second goal in order to stay in the game, and they were feeling discouraged for most of the second half until their substitute Depay made a impact.
With only 11 minutes remaining in regular time, Depay was subbed onto the field. Just 8 minutes later, he received a pass from Koke and confidently struck the ball into the bottom corner for a goal.
Atletico still had an opportunity to create one last play, however in stoppage time, Rodrigo Riquelme shot over the goal at the far post, forcing the need for additional time.
There were limited opportunities during the extra 30 minutes and a penalty shootout was required to decide the team advancing to the quarter-finals.
Oblak made crucial saves to block shots from Sanchez and Klaassen, while Inter’s captain Martinez missed his penalty kick, allowing Atletico to secure a 3-2 victory in the shootout.
Jadon Sancho netted a goal in his second consecutive game, securing Borussia Dortmund a spot in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory against PSV.
Following a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven the previous month, the game at Westfalenstadion was a decisive tie in which the hosts got off to an excellent start.
After three minutes had passed, PSV was unable to successfully get rid of the ball and Julian Brandt passed it to Sancho, who then took a touch before making a curved shot into the lower corner.
Since joining on loan from Manchester United in January, the England international has scored his second goal. This put Edin Terzic’s team in command for the second leg.
Although Dortmund was in the lead, it was only a small advantage and the score remained 1-0 until half-time. However, a second goal seemed to be coming with 13 minutes remaining.
Despite Niclas Fullkrug scoring off a Marco Reus free kick, the goal was not counted due to an offsides call. This kept PSV within one goal of potentially forcing extra time during their last-16 match.
During added time, the defining moment for the Dutch team arrived as Luuk de Jong executed a one-two play with Jordan Teze. He then had a clear shot at beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but unfortunately missed over the goalpost. Just moments later, the score became 2-0.
After receiving a free kick, Isaac Babadi slipped, giving Reus an open opportunity to score a goal. The famed player for Dortmund successfully made the shot, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
