George Parker Widman, an esteemed photojournalist for the Associated Press and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1988, passed away at the age of 79 at his residence in Trappe, Pennsylvania.
According to the family-provided obituary, Widman was born in Utica, New York on Sept. 16, 1944. He was raised in New Hartford, New York and later studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to being drafted, he briefly worked for the Gannett Utica newspapers. Following his military service of four years in U.S. Navy intelligence, he returned to his photography career.
After some time, he came back to Utica as director of photography. He also took on freelance work in the 1970s for various print media companies such as Associated Press, where he covered the NFL, general news, and the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid and Moscow.
In 1982, he joined AP as a staff photographer and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in feature photography in 1988 for his image of a transient man in Philadelphia. He left the AP in October 2007, retiring from his position.
Sally Hale, a former chief of the Pennsylvania bureau who collaborated with Widman in Philadelphia, stated that he was a skilled sports photographer and proficient in capturing any subject.
In the obituary penned by Widman, he stated that he viewed his experience of piloting the Goodyear Blimp (and nearly crashing it) before the 1985 Live Aid Concert in Philadelphia as the most memorable moment of his career. He also mentioned his enjoyment of teaching photo lighting methods to photojournalists from South America during his trip to Cartagena, Colombia.
Sarah, the wife of Widman, passed away in June 2012. Widman’s surviving family includes his sons, Robert Duncan Widman and James Widman, two grandsons, brother David Widman Jr., and sister Barbara Ann Winfield. Sadly, another sister named Eleanor Jean Turner passed away in 2020.
Information about the scheduled funeral and burial will be revealed at a later time.
