Individuals who flew on a flight to Dublin in the previous weekend are advised to get in touch with health officials due to a confirmed case of measles.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has announced that there have been three recorded instances of measles in Ireland so far this year.
On Saturday at 6:30am, the flight from Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways landed in the capital of Ireland.
The Health and Safety Executive reported that there was a confirmed instance of measles on the aircraft.
The HSE advises pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, or those with children under the age of 12 months to reach out for assistance.
Passengers on the flight have been requested to remain vigilant for any signs or symptoms of measles until March 30, which will mark 21 days from the possible time of exposure.
The HSE said symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing and cough, sore red eyes, a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or above and a rash, which usually appears on the head and neck first and then spreads to the rest of the body.
If the individual experiences any of these symptoms and becomes ill, they are advised to remain at home in a designated room and seek medical guidance. They should call ahead to make necessary arrangements.
They stated: “The Public Health teams at HSE will keep collaborating with Etihad Airways.”
The current population immunity in Ireland has fallen below the required rate, putting the country at risk for potential measles outbreaks, according to health authorities.
The Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland has issued a plea to certain passengers who may have crossed the Irish border on the same flight.
The Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Health Service Executive (HSE) conducted a risk evaluation and are now urging Northern Ireland residents who were on Etihad Airways flight EY045 from Abu Dhabi to Dublin on March 9 2024 to watch out for signs of measles. If you are at a higher risk for severe illness from measles, please call (028) 9536 8300 to see if you are eligible for necessary treatments.
For optimal results, it is recommended to administer these treatments within the next few days.
The individuals with the highest susceptibility are those who traveled on Etihad Airways flight EY045 and fall under one of the following categories: infants under 12 months old; expectant mothers; and individuals with weakened immune systems.
