On Saturday, President Joe Biden expressed remorse for his use of the term “illegal” when discussing the suspected perpetrator behind the death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.
Biden formally apologized following criticism from members of his own party for his use of the term to refer to individuals who entered the US without proper documentation.
During an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart in Atlanta, Georgia’s capital city, he expressed regret for using something that was illegal and not properly documented.
While campaigning in Rome, Georgia, Donald Trump criticized Mr. Biden’s apology.
Mr. Trump made a statement at his rally, criticizing Joe Biden for apologizing to the killer of Laken. He believed Biden should not have apologized at all.
22-year-old nursing student, Riley, was killed while she was running on the University of Georgia’s campus campus.
A 26-year-old man named Jose Ibarra from Venezuela was taken into police custody. He is believed to be an undocumented immigrant and has been accused of felony murder, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.
Donald Trump talks about meeting with Laken Riley’s family.
The death of Riley has sparked intense discussion as the 2024 presidential election approaches, with Republicans voicing criticism over the Biden administration’s actions regarding the immigration situation at the US-Mexico border.
Mr Trump, who has made immigration a central topic in his campaign, was joined at his rally by Riley’s parents, her sister, and friends on Saturday, who were welcomed with a standing ovation and large signs.
The previous president of the United States expressed their condolences and empathized with their sorrow.
Donald Trump stated that Joe Biden’s actions at the border are a violation of human rights and a betrayal of the American people, for which he will never be pardoned.
He claimed that Riley would still be alive had Joe Biden not intentionally and viciously weakened the borders of the United States and released countless dangerous criminals into the country.
The ex-president compared Mr. Biden’s apology, declaring that the accused murderer of Riley was an “undocumented immigrant.”
During his rally, he repeated that the individual was an unauthorized immigrant and migrant, going on to accuse Mr Biden of lacking remorse.
“He’s got no regret, he’s got no empathy, no compassion, and worst of all, he has no intention of stopping the deadly invasion that stole precious Laken’s beautiful American life,” Mr Trump said.
The word “illegal”, which used to be common, is now not as commonly used, especially among Democrats who are advocating for immigrant rights.
In his State of the Union speech on Thursday, Mr. Biden urged Republicans to approve a collaborative agreement on border security. However, this deal was ultimately blocked by opposing lawmakers following Mr. Trump’s disapproval.
Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch supporter of the previous administration, subsequently requested that President Biden mention the name of Riley, stating that she was killed by someone who was in the country illegally.
“Illegals, yeah,” Mr Biden replied to Ms Greene, then inquired about the number of deaths caused by “legal” individuals.
After the president apologized for using the term “illegal,” Mr. Trump’s campaign advisor Chris LaCivita criticized Mr. Biden for expressing remorse for his words instead of apologizing to Riley’s family.
According to Mr LaCivita, instead of apologizing for the specific word he used, he should be apologizing to the family as it accurately describes the situation.
