The evening before the Academy Awards is not a time for relaxation in Hollywood. For several nominees, such as “Barbie” actress Margot Robbie, it entailed attending the 15th annual pre-Oscar dinner hosted by Chanel and Charles Finch at the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel.
Robbie was in very good company, with other Oscar nominees including best supporting actress frontrunner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, as well as America Ferrera, Sandra Hüller, Justine Triet, Cord Jefferson, Jonathan Glazer and Celine Song, who all are expected at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday evening.
Celebrities gathered in the charming outdoor area of the famous Polo Lounge for pre-dinner drinks on a crisp evening in Beverly Hills. Robert De Niro was one of the first to arrive, but soon the venue was bustling with other notable names.
Kristen Stewart and her finance Dylan Meyer chatted with Daniel Kaluuya near a well-placed heat lamp, while Chloë Sevigny surveyed the room a few feet away. Elsewhere Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann found an elusive seat to sip their drinks, though Apatow leapt to his feat when JR came around to say hello.
Triet and her co-star Hüller from “Anatomy of a Fall” stayed in close proximity, John Mulaney and Olivia Munn engaged in conversation with David O. Russell, Adrien Brody and Patrick Dempsey chatted in a separate area, and Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos circulated among the group, conversing with various people.
Usher, a self-proclaimed fan of “Oppenheimer” and wearing chaps, was joined by Ava DuVernay, Michael Keaton, Molly Sims, Maya Rudolph, Tessa Thompson, James Marsden, Kerry Washington, Rebecca Hall, and Dominic Sessa in the crowd.
30 years ago, Finch began organizing this event out of kindness. He wanted to provide a place for his friends to gather before the Oscars. Over the years, it has become one of the most sought-after events in the city. 15 years ago, Chanel joined as a co-host, adding even more celebrities to the guest list with their brand ambassadors such as Stewart, Robbie, Lily-Rose Depp, and Phoebe Tonkin.
Finch confessed, “Organizing dinners fills me with dread. Even though I may appear outgoing, the reality is that it makes me incredibly anxious.”
Prior to the big event, Robbie, who received an Oscar nomination for producing “Barbie,” was feeling positive and energetic. She not only incorporated Chanel in her wardrobe for the red carpet, but also used the brand in the film, dressing her character, the stereotypical Barbie, in their clothing, accessories, and handbags.
“It really complemented the scene and the narrative, so it never felt contrived or misplaced,” stated Robbie. “We also had the opportunity to replicate some iconic styles, including one worn by Claudia Schiffer, who serves as a fantastic inspiration for Barbie overall. It was a truly enjoyable experience.”
Additionally, she mentioned that she is excited to support both Billie Eilish and Ryan Gosling, as they are both scheduled to perform their nominated original songs during the live broadcast of the show on Sunday. The show will begin an hour earlier than its usual start time at 7 p.m. EDT.
Robbie expressed his excitement, stating that he believes it will be an incredible experience.
