After more than ten years, a woman from Queensland has been accused of murder in connection with the passing of her infant daughter.
On September 2, 2011, paramedics discovered an unresponsive baby girl who had stopped breathing at a property southeast of Brisbane. Unfortunately, she passed away four days later at just three months old.
According to a statement from Queensland Police on Saturday, the infant was initially taken to Redland Bay Hospital and then transferred to Mater Children’s Hospital, where she passed away on September 6, 2011.
Although the case of the baby’s death was examined, no signs of wrongdoing were found and the investigation remained inconclusive.
After receiving new and reliable information from a member of the community in January 2024, the police have restarted their investigation into the death of the girl.
A specialized mission was initiated using fresh information, bringing in investigators from child welfare agencies.
The Queensland Police reported that “Operation Whiskey Magra” was launched with the participation of detectives from the Bayside Child Protection Investigation Unit (CPIU) and the Crime and Intelligence Command Child Trauma Unit.
The mother of the baby girl, a 29-year-old woman, was apprehended on Friday in the Logan suburb of Kingston town and is facing murder charges.
According to the Queensland Police, she was denied bail by the authorities and is scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 9th.
12 years ago, the young woman was 17 years old when the murder occurred.
Investigators must determine if the woman should be prosecuted as a juvenile.
Paul Dalton, a police officer from Queensland, expressed his sympathy for the individuals who had to cope with the devastating loss of their child 12 years ago. He stated that he could only imagine how horrific the experience must have been.
“Then for detectives to come and tell you 12 years later that we think your child had been murdered and not only that but that someone that you know is responsible… I can only imagine what they’re going through,” Mr Dalton said.
