Sam Smith donned two different ensembles while walking the runway at Vivienne Westwood’s fashion show during Paris Fashion Week.
Andreas Kronthaler’s new experimental collection was characterized by the Unholy singer’s two distinct outfits.
The initial ensemble was centered around a deconstructed plaid pattern: Smith donned short shorts and a jacket inspired by scarves, paired with tall platform boots and a hat – all featuring various styles of plaid. The outfit was finished off with a green sweater, argyle socks, and a wooden cane.
The Vivienne Westwood brand has been closely associated with Tartan for many years, tracing back to the emergence of the designer, who shares the same name as the brand, and her rebellious, countercultural fashion creations in the 1970s.
Vivienne Dame passed away in December of 2022, leaving her husband and Austrian designer, Kronthaler, to assume complete creative authority over the brand.
The assortment was filled with numerous familiar nods to Westwood, including the excessively tall platform footwear that Smith and multiple models sported.
Previously, models have stumbled on the catwalk while wearing these extremely high shoes – most notably when Naomi Campbell fell in the early 1990s.
Smith’s second outfit had a Gothic vibe, featuring a long dress with a cut-out design, paired with a halter top and a somber black hat.
Smith was not the sole familiar presence on the catwalk, as they were accompanied by Lila Moss, the daughter of renowned supermodel Kate.
She wore a textured light blue dress which appeared to have a pair of gloves and hood built in, as well as a studded black bustier over the top.
Lila is carrying on the tradition of Moss at Vivienne Westwood. In the 1990s, Kate was a well-known presence in the brand’s fashion shows. One of her standout moments was during the spring/summer 1994 collection, where she confidently strutted down the runway without a top, sporting a short skirt and indulging in an ice cream cone.
Both Smith and Lila Moss’ outfits felt like old-school Westwood, drawing upon historical references and giving them a punk feel.
The collection had a blend of various influences and sources of inspiration, including jockstraps adapted as codpieces and bold tops with exaggerated shoulders reminiscent of American football uniforms. Additionally, there were nods to the 1980s through pieces such as the oversized, blue conical bra corset.
However, there were also many modern aspects incorporated, such as the hooded attire and the heavy application of white makeup beneath the models’ eyes. These features give off a futuristic vibe and could potentially fit right in on the set of the upcoming sequel film, Dune: Part Two.
The first row also had a modern twist, as American actress Julia Fox resembled a character from a science fiction film with her dazzling green corset dress and lightened eyebrows highlighted with gold.
Emma Chamberlain, a popular influencer from the United States, accompanied her, wearing a skirt suit in black with prominently padded shoulders and a bold, spiky hairstyle.
At first glance, the recent collection from Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood may not seem very practical to wear. The clothing was curated in a disordered manner, featuring a mix of conflicting prints and fabrics.
The show’s chaotic energy was reflected in the lively performance, in which three musicians sang guttural noises through microphones while simultaneously playing instruments such as the violin, dancing, and stomping their feet.
Upon closer examination, there are a multitude of items within the assortment that could be suitable for individuals with less avant-garde fashion tastes. This is especially true for the shirts, boots, and bags that were featured on the runway.
While not appealing to everyone, it’s undeniable that Kronthaler is breaking fashion barriers and remains a highlight of the Paris Fashion Week lineup with their one-of-a-kind and intriguing shows.
