A teenager in Australia has been sentenced to three years in juvenile detention for committing a school shooting similar to those in America.
Last May, at the Atlantis Beach Baptist College, a 15-year-old fired three rounds from two rifles. However, according to Perth Children’s Court Judge Hylton Quail, it was “good luck” that prevented a tragic result. The judge mentioned this while sentencing the teenager.
A teenager, who has not been named in news reports, stole firearms and bullets from his father’s gun storage and then proceeded to Atlantis Beach Baptist College, where he discharged three rounds.
According to ABC News, a 12-year-old described how he saw grass fly up near him as one of the bullets hit the building, while another hit close to where students were walking.
Reworded: The school went into complete lockdown, causing the staff and students to hide in cabinets and under desks.
The juvenile called the emergency hotline to report that he was planning to “murder others and himself,” but has since had a change of heart because he does not want his siblings to be associated with a murderer.
The troubled Banksia Hill Juvenile Centre took custody of him after he was arrested. However, after ten days, he was given bail and went back to live with his family. Last year, the teenager admitted to several offenses, such as putting lives in danger and firing a gun to instill fear.
According to reports, this is the inaugural instance of an individual being sentenced for a school shooting in Australia.
According to BBC News, the lawyer for the teenager, Simon Freitag, argued in court that his client was experiencing depression and had not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. However, he also acknowledged that the mental impact on those at the school would be significant.
He stated that it is necessary to verbally express the blatantly apparent fact that this has sparked a great deal of fear and distress.
Rephrasing the statement from Judge Quail, it was stated that the crime was of a very severe and malicious nature. The judge also expressed that this act has instilled fear and distress in numerous individuals who are innocent and susceptible.
In the midst of this, Tony Buti, the education minister, released a statement emphasizing the importance of being watchful and proactive in caring for students’ well-being and regularly communicating with teachers and professionals.
