After extensive research, scientists have identified and given a name to a peculiar medusa species that has only been spotted twice in the past in the Sumisu Caldera, a volcanic structure located near the coast of Japan.
The name given to this type of jellyfish, which measures approximately 10cm across, is Santjordia pagesi. The reason for this name is due to the similarity of its vibrant red stomach to the Cross of St George.
This species resides more than 800m below the surface in the Sumisu Caldera located in the Ogasawara Islands, which is approximately 460 km south of Tokyo. The Sumisu Caldera is a hydrothermally active underwater volcano measuring about 10 km in diameter.
According to co-author André Morandini from the University of São Paulo in Brazil, this species stands out from previously found deep-sea medusae due to its distinctive characteristics. Unlike others in this environment, it is relatively small. The vivid red coloring of its stomach is likely related to its method of obtaining food.
In the ocean depths of approximately 812m, numerous organisms emit a glow through bioluminescence to help them navigate in the dark.
Experts believe that the new jellyfish’s vibrant red stomach is most likely a defense mechanism to prevent other predators from spotting the bioluminescent prey it consumes.

The medusa, discovered by researchers, showed significant differences from other closely related species. There is a suspicion that S.pagesi could potentially have a unique venom unlike any previously discovered.
Dr. Morandini emphasized that perhaps this location holds secrets that are more valuable than its mineral wealth, and by preserving it, both the species and the site will remain intact.
In most cases, finding a new type of organism involves gathering multiple samples. However, due to its scarce and difficult-to-gather nature, the description of S. pagesi was only based on one specimen.
It is hoped by researchers that future deep-sea surveys will reveal additional members of the group.
Dr. Morandini explained that we chose to share the details and highlight the types of species found at this location, since it has a significant amount of minerals and could be utilized for commercial purposes. However, conducting research in these areas requires collaboration with partners who also have similar interests.
