Noted financial leader, generous donor, and leader of the well-known Rothschild dynasty, Lord Jacob Rothschild has passed away at the age of 87.
On Monday, his family released a statement confirming his passing and described him as a prominent figure in the realms of finance and philanthropy, holding numerous high-ranking positions.
According to the Sunday Times Rich List from last year, the Rothschilds have an estimated wealth of approximately £825m. They reportedly donate £66m annually to Jewish causes, education and art.
In 1963, the British aristocrat began working at his family’s financial institution, NM Rothschild & Sons. However, he eventually left the family company in 1980 and later established J Rothschild Assurance Group (currently known as St James’s Place) in 1991.
Lord Rothschild was married for more than 50 years to Serena, who died in 2019, and leaves behind four children – Hannah, Beth, Emily and Nat – and many grandchildren. The Rothschild Foundation confirmed Lord Rothschild’s daughter Hannah would succeed him as chair of the charity.
In a public announcement about his passing, his relatives expressed, “The passing of our father, Jacob, will leave a significant impact on the lives of many. He was a highly successful financial expert, a strong advocate for the arts and culture, a dedicated public servant, a devoted patron of charitable efforts in Israel and the Jewish community, a devoted advocate for environmental conservation, and a beloved friend, father, and grandfather.”
The deceased will have a private funeral according to the traditions of the Jewish faith, followed by a commemoration event in the future to honor his life.
Lord Rothschild was born in Berkshire and received his education at Eton College. He continued his studies in history at Christ Church, Oxford.
Until 2019, he served as the chairman of RIT Capital Partners, which is one of the largest investment trusts listed on the London Stock Exchange.
He also served as deputy chairman at BSkyB Television, director of RHJ International (currently known as BHF Kleinwort Benson Group), and was a member of the Duchy of Cornwall council for Prince Charles, the current Prince of Wales.
Additionally, he established Windmill Hill Asset Management to oversee the charitable investments of his family.
In the area of culture, he served as the head of trustees at the National Gallery and also as the leader of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
He was a well-known supporter of the arts and posed for many paintings, including those by Lucian Freud and David Hockney. He also held the position of chairman of the Rothschild Foundation charity.
He made a significant charitable dedication to the upkeep and preservation of Waddesdon Manor and the surrounding Waddesdon estate in Buckinghamshire. He assumed responsibility for their management from his cousin, Dorothy de Rothschild, after her passing in 1988 on behalf of the National Trust.
The Rothschild Foundation and Waddesdon Manor released a statement on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their sorrow over the passing of Lord Rothschild. He was renowned for his success in business, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and contributions to the cultural world.
His family, colleagues, and numerous friends will dearly miss him, as stated by the source.
The Rothschild Foundation commented that Lord Rothschild was an exceptional individual who had a significant impact on various aspects of British society.
The statement included: “He was dedicated to aiding communities, protecting the environment, promoting education, and most importantly, supporting the arts.”
Jacob Rothschild was a remarkable individual, and his absence will be deeply experienced by many. The family is dedicated to upholding his enduring legacy and the foundation that held a special place in his heart and was generously funded by him.
