For most Netflix viewers, the disturbing and cruel killing of kittens committed by Canadian killer Luka Magnotta will have sparked immense disgust.
He streamed a video of himself using a vacuum cleaner and a plastic bag to harm an animal, and then proceeded to murder a Chinese student.
However, Scarlet Blake’s interest in violence, gore, and death was actually sparked by the three-part documentary Don’t F*** with Cats. Soon after viewing it, she resorted to using food and a crate to capture a cat and bring it to her home, where she subjected the animal to unthinkable acts of violence.
Using the same song, “True Faith” by New Order, as background music, Magnotta proceeded to insert a scalpel blade and handle into the cat’s eyes, then remove its fur and skin and blend its body.
During the livestream, the individual, who is 26 years old, was heard teasing and insulting someone, saying “Let’s get started, my little companion. Oh man, you smell terrible. I’m looking forward to thoroughly defeating you.”
In a mere four months, her twisted urge to inflict harm on others intensified greatly. Following an unexpected meeting with Blake as she was making her way home after a night out in Oxford, Jorge Martin Carreno tragically lost his life in the River Cherwell.
Following six hours of deliberation, a jury at Oxford Crown Court declared Blake, who showed no emotion throughout the trial, guilty of murder.
A few hours earlier, the BMW employee, who is 30 years old, had been laughing and making jokes with his coworkers at the Cow & Creek bar. As per one of his friends, he had mentioned his wish to establish a stable life and have children, after relocating from Spain to the UK in 2019.
Unfortunately, he encountered Blake while she was roaming at night, dressed in a thick coat and face covering, and on the hunt for a target. When he got lost, surveillance footage captured Mr Carreno sitting in Radcliffe Square before his murderer discovers him and gives him her bottle of vodka.
Later, she guided him to the isolated Parsons Pleasure spot. It is believed that she struck him on the back of his head, strangled him, and then drowned him in the river. His body was discovered lying face down the next day.
The pathologist concluded that the person had been choked or restrained around the neck until passing out, and then submerged under water.
The next day, an amateur wildlife photographer discovered his body while searching for kingfishers in the university parks. He noticed Mr. Carreno’s shoes first.
After the news of his death, his loved ones were devastated while the police commenced an investigation into the details surrounding it. Investigators have eliminated the chance of it being accidental.
Blake bragged to her American accomplice, Ashlynn Bell, about how she had strangled her target using a DIY garrote while he was inebriated.
Defense lawyer Richard Sutton KC informed jurors that Blake had informed Bell about her creation of a garrotte and her purchase of piano wire to make it, although Bell never saw it. Sutton also stated that Blake made remarks about there being minimal resistance and her expectation for the victim to fight back more.
She made a joke in one of her messages, saying: “The last time I encountered someone this intoxicated, they passed away lol.”
Security footage captures an individual responsible for harming cats as they roam the streets of Oxford in search of a target.
Blake admitted to the jury that she had fabricated a false story after seeing news coverage about the discovery of the body.
“I confessed to Ashlynn that I murdered that individual. I embellished the story in a dramatic manner,” she recounted. “I informed her that I utilized a homemade garotte in an attempt to decapitate the victim, but it proved to be more challenging than I anticipated. Then, I disposed of the body in the river, which is currently being retrieved.”
Blake also attempted to shift the blame onto Bell for causing her to kill the cat. She claimed that Bell had been pressuring her and conditioning her to follow her commands. According to Blake, Bell would force her to perform harmful acts over video calls, such as self-harm or setting up a noose and putting her head through it.
Blake, who admitted to causing damage in connection with the cat’s death, expressed pleasure in dismantling lifeless objects and exploring their inner workings. She explained, “I suppose I was pretending that the cat wasn’t a living being with thoughts and feelings.”
Blake stated that the situation is detached from reality, and while it may have been sexually stimulating for the other person, for him it is simply a way to reciprocate and bring pleasure to them.
The jurors were informed that Blake possessed a fragmented persona, which included identifying as a cat. This led her to meow at her friends as a form of greeting and she even demonstrated this behavior in court to showcase it to the jury.
“It’s interesting how my emotions become more noticeable when I express them,” she explained. “For instance, the cat is often linked with joy and an inherent sense of goodness. It also evokes a sense of childhood innocence.”
During their inquiry, law enforcement discovered several videos in Blake’s possession depicting her and her significant other participating in voluntary strangulation using ligatures.
On the bed, one can see a woman’s partner tightening the cord of her leopard print dressing gown around her neck. She appears to collapse and then takes deep breaths as she recovers.
In the second video, Blake is seen pulling a white cord tightly around her partner’s neck from behind. This causes her partner to collapse, but she eventually recovers.
The twisted murderer had a fixation with a dressing gown and even took a selfie with it one hour before killing Mr. Carreno.
The prosecutor, Alison Morgan KC, stated to the jurors that this interest was more than just a fantasy. She also shared that the defendant identified herself as someone who found sexual pleasure in thoughts of violence and death.
She shared videos of herself and one of her partners participating in consensual strangulation in a sexual context. She also discussed with others her thoughts on the experience of killing someone.
Although she denied committing murder, she was convicted of the crime and is scheduled to appear for sentencing on Monday morning. It is anticipated that she will receive a mandatory life sentence.
