Frolov is quickly becoming a notable event on the London Fashion Week (LFW) schedule.
Ivan Frolov, a creative director, operates his company in his hometown of Kyiv. He was one of three designers chosen to participate in the first Ukrainian Fashion Week in London last year, and he recently showcased his second individual collection at LFW.
Frolov drew inspiration for this season from his childhood memories of vacationing in Crimea. He used to spend every summer there until it was annexed in 2014.
The brand is famous for its fitted dresses featuring bold heart-shaped cut-outs, as showcased in Jennifer Lopez’s bridal gown in the Can’t Get Enough music video. However, the collection for autumn/winter 2024 deviated from this design.
The clothing remained highly provocative and filled with influences from the 2000s – envision short, low-waisted mini skirts with attached thong straps and many corsets.
The collection featured a lot of leopard prints, capitalizing on the popular ‘mob wife’ trend on TikTok. The prints could be seen on both elegant gowns and shorter dresses paired with gloves.
Frolov appeared to thoroughly enjoy incorporating various textures and patterns into this collection. She combined lace, leather, and feathers to create a rock-and-roll vibe.
The color scheme was opulent, deep, and evocative – and each selection was carefully deliberate.
Frolov stated in the show notes that the unique burgundy hue of the dresses was inspired by the color of the leather sofas typically seen on the eagerly-awaited trips on the Kyiv-Sevastopol trains.
“The use of corduroy, a new fabric for the brand, creates a green hue in the designs that evokes the image of sun-dappled pine needles. The gradient on Frolov’s statement corsets captures my appreciation for Crimean sunsets and the unevenness of tans on exposed skin.”
According to Dominic Skinner, director of make-up artistry at M.A.C Cosmetics, the models’ hair was tousled and their eyes sported a smokey look while their lips had a matte finish. The inspiration for this look was taken from iconic 90s it girls such as Pamela Anderson.
Skinner explained that for a stunning makeup look, one should have well-defined lips with a lighter lipstick and a classic smokey eye. However, she also added that sometimes when going out after a disagreement with a friend, one may find themselves in the bathroom wiping away tears before continuing to enjoy the party.
Frolov’s fashion creations are gaining popularity among celebrities. Beyoncé donned a unique pink and silver sheer mini dress in Dubai last year, and other singers such as Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, and Rita Ora have also been seen wearing his designs.
This assortment maintained its sexiness, but had a slightly grittier feel compared to what we typically see from Frolov – so it’s likely that we’ll spot some of these garments being worn by musicians during performances in the upcoming months.
