A young girl lost her life in a house fire that occurred in the Bronx, leading to a tragic event in New York City.
The fire started on Saturday at approximately 4:30pm on Boyd Avenue. Firefighters discovered the deceased girl inside. A 7-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in stable condition, while a 47-year-old man declined medical treatment, as reported by WABC.
Neighbour Les Padgett told the local CBS outlet that he attempted to enter the home.
“I quickly rushed over here to assess the situation, but the amount of smoke was overwhelming. As a result, there wasn’t much I could do. Fortunately, the fire department arrived quickly,” he informed the media.
Nalini Gocool, a neighbor, shared with CBS that she strongly believed the specific house and child were involved. She explained that she was familiar with the two children and knew the boy to be well-behaved while the girl had a disability.
The New York Post named the girl as Skylar Michilin and stated that she was on the verge of turning 14. However, several other local sources reported her age as 12.
At approximately 4:15pm, Skylar was resting on the second floor when the fire broke out.
According to the Post, Skylar attended school while dealing with Down’s syndrome, being nonverbal, and using a wheelchair.
Erdene Kims, a 21-year-old resident, reported to the newspaper that she witnessed the fire. She was outside with another woman who had already called the fire department. Kims cried out for help, saying “Fire, we need people to assist!”
Some individuals attempted to enter with their phones, but they were unable to reach her, according to Kims. The window shattered and fire emerged from the second floor, leaving us with no option but to cry out for help from the Lord.
The blaze was contained in just 45 minutes, around 5pm.
“I had a conversation with her during lunchtime and I took care of her by changing her and feeding her. I also gave her lunch, which she really enjoys McDonald’s French fries. When I left at around 12, she was on the bed. We had a big day planned for her tomorrow. She was using her iPad and watching movies, particularly ones from Bart Baker and Christmas songs, which she loves listening to starting in September. Mariah Carey was her favorite time to listen to music. Her iPad was like a friend to her,” said Rosemarie Thompson, the mother, in an interview with the Post.
