The 2024 Met Gala has announced its official dress code and co-chairs.
Vogue revealed on February 15th that Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, and editor-in-chief Anna Wintour will act as co-chairs for the 2021 Met Gala. The highly-anticipated fashion affair, held on the first Monday in May, will align with the debut of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute showcase, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.
As with previous years, the Met Gala has a specific dress code. The 2024 Met Gala will have a dress code called “The Garden of Time”. This is based on the upcoming exhibit, which showcases 50 significant historical pieces, some of which are too delicate to be worn again. The dress code is inspired by a short story by JG Ballard, written in 1962.
Per Vogue, “The Garden of Time” centers around Count Axel and his wife, the Countess, residing in a lavish villa with a view of a stunning garden. However, an enraged crowd steadily approaches the villa, prompting Count Axel to pluck a flower from the garden to turn back time. Yet, as the flowers in the garden diminish, the mob eventually reaches the villa and its once-bountiful garden.
In simple terms, the Met Gala attendees are expected to adhere to a dress code that reflects transient beauty. They can opt for the obvious by wearing floral patterns or even real flowers to portray a garden. Vogue suggests taking inspiration from the “Sleeping Beauties” exhibit, which features a black evening coat by Charles Frederick Worth from 1889.
One of the themes present in the Met Gala’s dress code for “The Garden of Time” is the concept of time and its fleeting nature. Guests may choose to incorporate clocks into their outfits, such as the Fall 2022 Moschino gown inspired by a grandfather clock.
The Costume Institute’s display, titled “Sleeping Beauties,” offers plenty of ideas for this year’s dress code. The exhibit will showcase nearly 250 pieces from the museum’s permanent collection, including designs by Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Givenchy, spanning 400 years of fashion history. The exhibit is divided into three main sections: land, sea, and sky, each representing the natural elements and materials used in creating garments. With a focus on the intersection of nature and fashion over time, sustainability will be a key theme throughout the exhibit.
Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, will be co-chairing the Met Gala once again this year. However, it will be the first time for Marvel actor Chris Hemsworth to attend the event. Singer “On The Floor” has been to the Met Gala 13 times, and Zendaya’s fans are familiar with her stunning outfits on the Met’s steps. Rapper Bad Bunny will also be returning for his third year at the Met Gala, but this time as a co-chair. Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will also join as honorary chairs for the evening.
The Met Gala theme for the previous year honored the iconic designer, Karl Lagerfeld, who had passed away. Titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” the event showcased 150 of his designs from his tenure as creative director at Fendi, Chloe, and Chanel. However, the theme received backlash due to Lagerfeld’s past controversial remarks, which included fatphobic, homophobic, and derogatory comments towards women.
The Met Gala is an annual event that raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Attendance can be as expensive as $50,000 per person. While the guest list for this year’s Met Gala is not yet confirmed, it is certain that Wintour will have the final say on which celebrities will be invited, aside from the co-chairs.
