Brennan Johnson is enthusiastic about the potential for success that Tottenham has this season, thanks to their increased depth in the team.
The Spurs were able to have captain Son Heung-min and Yves Bissouma rejoin the team for their thrilling 2-1 win against Brighton on Saturday, following their recent international duties.
Son was responsible for assisting substitute Johnson in scoring a last-minute goal, securing Tottenham’s position in the race for Champions League qualification and making them a strong contender for the title.
The manager, Ange Postecoglou, has been dealing with a depleted team since November due to injuries, suspensions, and players being away for international matches. However, he currently has a complete squad and has utilized substitutes in the past two weeks to lead the team to victories against Brentford and Brighton.
Johnson emphasized that without everyone being on board, the team cannot play well or maintain a sense of unity. He also stated that everyone is fully committed to the playing style of the manager.
”
During the break, he expressed his frustration as we deviated from our preferred playing style. However, when we scored a goal in the manner we practice every day, it was a rewarding sensation.
The team is filled with excitement as all the players have returned, including some important ones who were previously absent. Our manager has mentioned that during training, the starting team will face off against the substitutes. The high level of skill and talent makes it difficult to differentiate between the two teams.
The training competition is always positive and there is no animosity. Everyone gets along well and we strive to challenge ourselves.
“It is evident, as seen in the game against Brentford, that even when players are not performing at their best due to various reasons, it is not their fault. This showcases the strength of our squad and the ability of substitute players to make a significant impact.”
Johnson’s goal in the 96th minute was another positive moment for him, following a somewhat inconsistent beginning with the north London team.
Despite a slow start this season, he has recently scored his third goal for Tottenham, bringing his total goal contributions to four in the last seven Premier League matches.
Johnson expressed to SpursPlay: “As a player, moments like that are what you envision in your dreams.”
“Even while I was a substitute, I was aware that our team possesses great talent. Being substituted in alongside a player like Sonny, who has incredible crossing abilities from the left side, was a great opportunity.”
“I made sure to get it in. It seemed to be moving slowly, but the satisfaction of getting the ball into the goal is indescribable.”
Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Brighton, was unable to attend the match at Tottenham as he was recovering from a dental procedure in his home country of Italy.
De Zerbi, who was also serving a one-match touchline ban, remained in communication with his staff during the game, according to his assistant.
Andrea Maldera, assistant coach for the Seagulls, disclosed that Roberto was in constant communication with us throughout the entire match.
During the first half, there wasn’t much to analyze as the match was quite predictable. However, during half-time, I had a conversation with him and he shared some helpful suggestions with both me and the team.
“He made substitutions in the second half while watching the match on TV.”
