During his long wait to become king, Charles has always maintained a strict diet and daily exercise routine to ensure his physical health.
The 75-year-old king received a cancer diagnosis on Monday, following a routine check-up last month which revealed an enlarged prostate that was not related to the cancer.
Although Buckingham Palace has announced that he maintains a positive attitude, the diagnosis will come as a distressing surprise to the health-conscious King.
Although he will now take a temporary break from his public duties, he has maintained a remarkably healthy lifestyle thus far, aside from some injuries sustained during a long career in polo and two bouts of coronavirus during the pandemic.
According to a list of 70 facts published by Clarence House in 2018 to commemorate Prince Charles’ 70th birthday, it was disclosed that he limits his daily meals to only two.
The 20th fact listed is: “The Prince does not have lunch.”
According to Gordon Rayner, who used to be a royal correspondent for The Telegraph, the King considers lunch to be a “luxury” that disrupts his packed schedule.
According to Julian Payne, a former press secretary, the King does not eat lunch. Therefore, when traveling with him, Payne learned the importance of having a substantial breakfast or bringing snacks to sustain oneself throughout the day. The work schedule is demanding, starting with listening to the radio news and having a breakfast consisting of fresh fruit and tea.
The King is said to prefer homemade bread made with nutrient-rich flours like rye and spelt, as well as eggs and side salads with every meal.
To be more specific, coddled eggs that have been cooked for just two to three minutes are said to be his favourite, and he is know to enjoy mashing them into a mayonnaise texture.
Some of Prince Charles’ preferred foods include wild mushrooms and plums picked from his gardens at Highgrove, as well as salmon and cheese with crackers.
In an interview with the BBC in 2021, Charles revealed that he refrains from consuming meat and fish on two days of the week. Additionally, he avoids dairy products on one of those days.
In the month that Charles became king, Buckingham Palace advertised a job for a live-in vegan chef to cook meals for the royal family.
He has previously explained that his intermittent veganism is primarily for the benefit of the environment. He also avoids consuming meat from factory farms.
In May 2023, former royal chefs Darren McGrady and Carolyn Robb shared with Delish that the king has a strong interest in organic food.
According to Mr. McGrady, Charles was interested in organic produce “before it even existed”. Ms. Robb also confirmed that the monarch’s farm was among the first in the UK to receive organic certification.
In addition to following a strict diet, it is said that the ruler adheres to a structured workout regimen.
In 2020, The Telegraph stated that Charles performs the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 5XB program, which consists of five fundamental exercises, twice daily.
The routine was created for pilots who require the ability to workout without a gym.
The 11-minute exercise routine includes 2 minutes of stretching, 1 minute of sit-ups, 1 minute of back and leg raises, 1 minute of push-ups, and 6 minutes of jogging in place. During the jogging portion, perform 10 eagle jumps every 75 steps.
In his revealing memoir “Spare,” Prince Harry shared that the King would often do headstands while partially clothed in order to cope with the chronic pain caused by his previous polo injuries.
The Duke of Sussex stated that Charles performed these routines every day, dressed in boxers, either leaning against a door or suspended from a bar like a talented acrobat.
Queen Camilla shared that the King enjoys walking and is very physically active. In 2020, when he was in his early 70s, she described him as being one of the most physically fit men she knows.
She described him as a tireless walker, comparing him to a mountain goat who can easily outpace others for miles.
She mentioned that King Charles frequently takes long walks spanning several miles.
