The halftime show at the Super Bowl, the biggest night in football, often features some of the most memorable fashion moments.
In recent times, the Super Bowl halftime show has continuously increased in scale and extravagance. Since the inaugural performance by New Kids on the Block in 1991, where they sported coordinated all-black attire, the halftime show has become known for its elaborate stages and dazzling wardrobe.
In the previous year, Rihanna, who won a Grammy award, performed at the halftime show, following in the footsteps of other popular singers like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Madonna. However, unlike previous performers who impressed with their flashy attire, Rihanna’s outfit caused a stir among the audience and those watching from home, as it showed her to be pregnant.
In the upcoming 2024 performance, Usher will be in the spotlight as he performs on stage. Unlike previous years where he wore eye-catching women’s outfits, this time we can anticipate seeing Usher in a printed suit, a latex ensemble, or his iconic leather two-piece.
Some highlights from previous Super Bowl halftime shows include Rihanna’s pregnancy appearance, Katy Perry’s four wardrobe changes, and Madonna’s Cleopatra-inspired outfit. These moments showcase some of the most memorable fashion choices from the event.
Rihanna
The previous year, the icon wore a ruby red jumpsuit and a large puffer jacket designed by JW Anderson, which paid tribute to André Leon Talley. This outfit also hinted at what was to come for the singer – Rihanna was pregnant, once again.
Mary J Blige
In 2022, renowned rapper Mary J Blige shared the stage with Dr Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg as co-headliners for the Super Bowl halftime show at SoFi Stadium in California. The hip hop icon delivered an unforgettable performance, singing crowd favorites “No More Drama” and “Family Affair” while wearing a stunning ensemble of a two-piece set and thigh-high boots in a mirrored leopard print designed by Peter Dundas.
The Weeknd
In 2021, The Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime performance transformed the Las Vegas strip. He appeared on stage in a unique black and red suit created by Matthew Williams from Givenchy, which required a total of 250 hours to complete.

JLo and Shakira’s
Shakira and another popular artist shared the spotlight as they jointly performed at the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show. Shakira kicked off the show in a Swarovski-adorned short red dress with decorative fringe, created by fashion designer Peter Dundas.
Afterwards, J-Lo emerged wearing an entirely black leather ensemble created by Atelier Versace, then later switched into a bedazzled bodysuit also crafted by the Italian fashion brand. To conclude the performance, the two ladies appeared on stage wearing matching metallic attire.
Lady Gaga
In her 2017 show, Lady Gaga not only started her performance by leaping off the top of the NRG Stadium, but she also switched costumes three times.
The daring performance by Lady Gaga featured a Versace bodysuit covered in Swarovski crystals and knee-high boots. She later added a spiked gold jacket to play the keytar, and then changed into a top inspired by football, complete with shoulder pads and micro pants.
Katy Perry
In 2015, Katy Perry’s Super Bowl performance became iconic with an incredibly intricate display. The artist started her halftime show by riding in on a robotic lion and wearing a fiery outfit designed by Jeremy Scott.
Perry ended up wearing four different outfits throughout the event, including a colorful mini dress inspired by the 1950s, a zip-up hoodie, and a floor-length silver gown adorned with stars. And let’s not forget about Left Shark.
are both popular artists in the music industry.
Bruno Mars and Beyoncé are two of the most well-known musicians in the music business.
Although both popular singers individually performed as the main act during the Super Bowl halftime show, their unexpected appearances during Coldplay’s show stole the spotlight.
In 2016, Bruno Mars and Beyoncé made a surprise appearance during Coldplay’s halftime show. To add to the performance, the “Uptown Funk” artist and his band wore coordinated black leather outfits inspired by 1980’s hip-hop fashion from Versace.
Mars wore loose-fitting pants and a dark jacket adorned with gold buttons and cuffs that displayed Versace’s iconic Greek design. He completed the ensemble with gold chains and Nike sneakers.
Beyoncé drew inspiration from Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime show for her own performance, wearing a custom Dsquared2 leather jacket with gold accents. During her performance of “Formation,” she also paid tribute to the Black Panthers with her background dancers dressed in black leather, berets, and combat boots.
Michael Jackson
Speaking of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime show look has gone down in fashion history. The “Thriller” singer appeared on stage wearing a military-style black jacket and aviator sunglasses. He then removed the jacket to reveal a white T-shirt and billowing white jacket.
Prince
In 2007, Prince wore a turquoise suit and orange shirt while performing at the Super Bowl halftime show. Despite heavy rain, he also played his famous purple guitar.
Madonna
During the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, Madonna may have set a new record for the most unexpected guest appearances. She featured LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, MIA, and Cee Lo Green, and even MIA’s controversial gesture couldn’t steal the spotlight from Madonna’s three wardrobe changes.
Madonna wore three different outfits during her performance, all of which were created by Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy haute couture. For the beginning of her performance, the singer appeared in a golden cape adorned with sequins, studs, and crystals, with a leopard-print chiffon lining. She accessorized this first look with a gold headpiece from Phillip Treacy.
Afterwards, Madonna switched to a different outfit consisting of a short Givenchy dress, studded belt, and a short cape. She also wore custom Miu Miu boots that reached her thighs and were black with gold accents. To end her performance, she wore a long black coat with embellishments from Givenchy.
Diana Ross
Prior to Katy Perry’s four wardrobe adjustments, there was Diana Ross. The singer also had four wardrobe changes throughout her 12-minute performance at the 1996 Super Bowl halftime show. The performer kicked off the show in a red sequin mini dress, and later transitioned into a flowy orange and purple gown.
During her third wardrobe adjustment, while singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” she traded her long dress for a gold cape. The diva concluded her performance by donning a purple embroidered jumpsuit.
Shania Twain
In 2003, the famous country singer performed at the Super Bowl halftime show wearing a sparkling bra, short black skirt, and a flowing cape that was tied at the waist.
Black Eyed Peas
Although the Black Eyed Peas’ show at the 2011 Super Bowl was not highly praised, the group still went all out with their eye-catching costumes that glowed in the dark and featured flickering LEDs, reminiscent of Tron: Legacy.
‘s 2004 Super Bowl performance has sparked controversy and debate over the years.
The 2004 Super Bowl show by Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake has been a topic of controversy and discussion for many years.
The Super Bowl halftime show that will always be remembered is Jackson’s 2004 performance with Justin Timberlake. She wore a leather studded corset from Alexander McQueen during the show. However, the attention was taken away from her fashion moment when Timberlake accidentally exposed her breast while tearing off the front of her costume, resulting in the infamous “nipplegate” incident. Let’s give Janet the justice she deserves.
