A judge in South Carolina has determined that statements made by a court clerk did not influence the jury’s decision to find Alex Murdaugh guilty in his murder trial from the previous year.
Judge Jean Toal declined a plea from Murdaugh’s lawyers on Monday for a fresh trial due to allegations that Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill had interfered with the jury.
Earlier this month, Judge Toal set a challenging requirement for the defense to demonstrate. She determined that Murdaugh’s lawyers must show that any possible wrongdoing, such as alleged statements made by Ms. Hill cautioning jurors not to believe Murdaugh’s testimony, directly influenced the jurors to change their verdict to guilty.
