Thinking about trading the harsh winter weather for a warm, tropical getaway? You may want to reconsider the Bahamas.
The US embassy has issued a security alert and travel advisory stating that the island nation is currently not safe for tourists due to 18 reported murders in the capital city of Nassau since the start of 2024.
The US Embassy in Nassau has issued a warning for US citizens, stating that there have been 18 reported murders in Nassau since the start of 2024.
There have been reports of killings happening at all times, even during daylight on public roads. Revenge-driven gang conflicts have been the main reason behind the murders in 2024.
After receiving a security warning, the US State Department upgraded the Bahamas to a Level 3 on its “Exercise Increased Caution” list on Friday. The department advised Americans to stay vigilant, be mindful of their surroundings, and not resist if faced with robbers.
“Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas,” the warning read. “Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence. ”
The State Department advised travelers against attempting to resist physically if robbed, and to exercise caution when traveling at night.
The State Department also cautioned that there is inconsistent regulation of recreational watercraft rentals, tours, and trips.
The statement stated that water vehicles may not be adequately taken care of and certain individuals may not possess proper safety certifications. It is advised to consistently check and follow any local weather and marine warnings before participating in water-related activities.
The department also cautioned against swimming alone in the Bahamas, where shark attacks have occurred recently.
According to the Associated Press, in December a woman visiting from Boston was fatally attacked by a shark while paddleboarding near the western end of New Providence island, which is home to the capital city of Nassau.
According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been at least 33 documented instances of unprovoked shark attacks in the Bahamas since 1580, making it the ninth highest ranked country globally.
In a speech to the nation last week, Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis addressed the recent security alert and announced plans for heightened police activity and roadblocks, as reported by the Nassau Guardian.
“He stated that although it may cause delays to your appointments and plans, the overall advantage of having safer streets and reducing violent crimes is worth the inconvenience.”
The State Department recently increased its travel advisory for Jamaica to Level 3 due to high levels of violent crime such as home invasions, armed robberies, murders, and sexual assaults. These incidents are reported to happen frequently, even at all-inclusive resorts.
