The Ghana Football Association announced that Chris Hughton has been dismissed from his role as coach of the Ghana team. This decision was made following their defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations, which resulted in their elimination.
Ghana finished third in Group B at the tournament in the Ivory Coast after a 2-2 draw with Mozambique on Monday and any outside hope they had of a place in the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed finishers ended on Tuesday with results in Groups C and D.
The Ghana Football Association has announced the immediate dismissal of Chris Hughton as head coach of the senior national team. The Executive Council has also chosen to disband the technical team of the Black Stars, according to a statement.
The Ghana Football Association announced that a plan will be presented in the near future outlining the future plans for the Black Stars.
Hughton, whose father was from Ghana, became the coach in March after previously working as a technical advisor for the team during the World Cup in Qatar.
The ex-coach of Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, aged 65, achieved four victories out of 13 games while in charge. He was already facing criticism before the Cup of Nations finals, and added to the pressure when Ghana suffered a defeat to the lesser-known Comoros Islands in a World Cup qualifying match in November.
During the Cup of Nations, their first match resulted in a loss against the Cape Verde Islands. As a result, a furious fan attempted to physically harm him. They then tied with both Egypt and Mozambique, earning only two points overall.
Hughton was among the potential candidates considered for the open position of Ireland manager.
Hughton, a former fullback for Ireland with 53 caps, is the second coach to leave the Cup of Nations due to Gambia’s poor performance in Group C. Earlier on Tuesday, Tom Saintfiet resigned from his position as Gambia’s manager.
