The United Kingdom and the United States have carried out new air attacks on Houthi rebel sites in Yemen. This is the second instance in the past 10 days that the two nations have jointly responded to the Iran-supported group with airstrikes.
On Monday evening, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden discussed their plans to work with other countries in order to prevent and interrupt any future attacks from the Houthis on shipping in the Red Sea.
Authorities report that a collaborative effort between British and American fighter jets successfully eliminated Houthi facilities storing missiles and launchers.
However, the strikes on Monday night were much smaller compared to the first joint operation by the US and UK 10 days prior. The previous operation targeted around 60 different locations throughout the Houthi-controlled Yemen.
The US, UK, Bahrain, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands released a statement together stating that the airstrikes were aimed at disrupting and weakening the Houthis’ ability to endanger global trade and harm innocent sailors.
Besides coordinating with British troops, the United States has carried out seven sets of air attacks on Houthi military locations. These airstrikes have specifically aimed at air bases controlled by the rebels and suspected sites where missiles may be launched.
The current strikes, according to a member of the Conservative party, are not a singular event.
Huw Merriman has stated that if the Houthis persist in attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea, the recent air strikes will not be a singular occurrence.
During an interview with Sky News, Mr Merriman was asked if the UK would potentially participate in additional military attacks on the rebel militant group in Yemen. He responded by stating that ruling out such action was not possible and that the UK would always follow through on their statements with action.
However, this further illustrates that these incidents will not be isolated occurrences if the Houthis persist.
It would be problematic to make that decision. If we were to act and the Houthis reacted, but we did not follow through, it would send a negative message.
“This exemplifies our determination to take necessary actions against the Houthis in order to safeguard international shipping and the individuals operating these vessels.”
