Elon Musk, the billionaire behind tech company Tesla, is scheduled to participate in an online discussion on anti-Semitism next week. He will also be visiting the Auschwitz death camp, several months after receiving backlash for promoting a Jewish conspiracy theory on his social media platform, X.
In November, Musk was accused of being antisemitic when he responded to a post on X by stating “You have said the actual truth,” which falsely claimed that Jewish communities promote hatred towards white people.
The White House swiftly expressed disapproval of his remarks, and during a visit to Israel, President Isaac Herzog scolded Musk. Musk admitted that his endorsement was a misstep, labeling it as one of his most unwise actions on the platform.
He is currently scheduled to embark on a two-day journey to Poland starting on Monday, a mere week before International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th. This day serves as a tribute to the six million Jewish individuals who lost their lives at the hands of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party.
The European Jewish Association has coordinated the visit to bring attention to the increase in antisemitism following Israel’s invasion of Gaza in response to the Hamas attacks on October 7th.
Andrzej Szejna, the deputy foreign minister of Poland, stated that the dangers of nationalism, populism, racism, and other forms of xenophobia and hatred are widely recognized as a significant threat to democracy, human rights, and the EU.
I believe this is likely the explanation for why Mr. Musk is among the invited guests who have already confirmed their attendance.
Musk has publicly expressed his disapproval of the Anti-Defamation League, an organization working to combat antisemitism. Their spokesperson suggested that the entrepreneur would gain insight from a visit.
According to Todd Gutnick, a member of the group, everyone should take the chance to observe the horrors that occurred in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz serves as a powerful warning of the consequences of a society or its leaders being consumed by antisemitism.
Ben Shapiro, a conservative political commentator known for his vocal support for Israel, will also be on the panel.
