During Saturday evening’s Serie A game against Udinese, AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan and his fellow players left the field in the first half. They ended up winning the match 3-2.
The 28-year-old French player exited the game soon after his team scored, seemingly signaling to referee Fabio Maresca that he had experienced racist remarks from the audience at Stadio Friuli.
Maignan was trailed by his teammates from Milan, after Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored a goal for them in the 31st minute. However, they all returned to the field and the game continued after a delay of approximately 10 minutes.
AC Milan shared on X after the game: “Racism has no place in our sport, and we are shocked and disgusted by it. Our thoughts are with you, Mike.”
Ian Wright, a former striker for England, posted on X: “The rest of the team stands in solidarity with you. Keep walking off the field! We have tried ‘playing through it’ but nothing has changed. Points should be deducted, as the fines are ineffective.”
After the game resumed, Udinese responded with a goal from Lazar Samardzic before halftime. In the second half, Florian Thauvin, who came on as a substitute, scored to give them the lead. Milan’s Luka Jovic then scored a late equalizer, but substitute Noah Okafor ultimately secured the win with a goal in stoppage time.
