Cape Verde secured their spot in the knockout rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Mozambique 3-0, making them the first team to do so.
Bebe’s exceptional free-kick and two goals from Ryan Mendes in Abidjan ensured that the Blue Sharks will finish first in Group B.
Currently, Mozambique occupies the last position in their group with one point, heading into their last game against Ghana. On Monday, Cape Verde will face Egypt.
After their surprising win against Ghana, Cape Verde put on an impressive performance right from the start.
Deroy Duarte caused Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan Siluane to make a skillful save, and the midfielder from Fortuna Sittard also attempted a diving header that narrowly missed the goal post.
Bebe crashed a dipping 30-yard free-kick against the crossbar, but the former Manchester United striker was not to be denied from an even greater distance.
Bebe took a free-kick from 40 yards out, and despite there initially seeming to be little danger, his shot curved and caught Siluane off guard. Siluane could only deflect the ball into the net.
Mozambique did not cause much concern until Witi’s weak shot directly at Vozinha. However, the Mambas were given an opportunity to get back into the game five minutes before halftime.
Geny Catamo was brought down by two defenders, resulting in a penalty being given. However, after referee Samir Guezzaz checked the VAR monitor, he changed his decision.
After 51 minutes, Mendes increased the Blue Sharks’ lead by taking the ball from the slow-moving Edmilson Dove and scoring from the edge of the box.
Catamo nearly hit the crossbar with a well-executed free kick, but unfortunately, Mozambique’s chances were ultimately dashed in a dramatic fashion.
Mendes had the opportunity to take a shot from 25 yards with plenty of room, and his powerful strike flew past Siluane for his 17th goal in international play, solidifying an impressive performance.
