On Sunday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that a plane preparing for takeoff had a collision with another aircraft at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
There were no reported injuries, the planes were both designed by Boeing, and the FAA will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
On Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Central Time, a collision occurred between the left wing tip of a Boeing 777 from All Nippon Airways, a Japanese airline, and the rear of a Boeing 717 from Delta Air Lines. This was confirmed by FAA spokesperson Tony Molinaro.
Boeing, a company that produces aircrafts, is currently under close examination due to a string of mechanical malfunctions. The Boeing 737 Max 9 model was recently grounded after an emergency exit door failed, leading to an emergency landing. The cause of the incident on Sunday is still unknown and it is uncertain if it was caused by a flaw in the manufacturing process.
On Monday, Boeing did not offer a statement about the incident at O’Hare and referred The Associated Press to the involved airlines and the FAA.
On Monday afternoon, Delta representative Emma Johnson reported via telephone that a Delta plane was hit by an All Nippon Airways aircraft while the Delta plane was parking at a gate after arriving from Detroit at O’Hare airport.
Delta’s maintenance technicians are currently evaluating the aircraft while customers deplaned as usual at the gate, according to a statement sent via email by the company.
On Monday afternoon, Raymond Bongalon, a customer service representative for All Nippon Airways, stated that the airline was currently unable to give any details regarding the incident.
According to the airline’s flight status search, Flight 11 was supposed to be en route to Tokyo but was ultimately canceled due to an “aircraft inspection.”
The Chicago Department of Aviation has yet to provide a response to a comment request.
