The attire donned by Nicole Kidman in her famous AMC Theatres commercial is now being sold at an auction held by Sothebys. This gives admirers the opportunity to imagine the satisfaction of heartbreak in a setting such as this.
It is common knowledge among movie fans that the Australian performer was featured in a highly shared pre-movie commercial for the American theatre company, AMC Theatres, in 2021. The commercial became the inspiration for various memes, parodies on Saturday Night Live, and even Halloween outfits. Due to its widespread popularity, it is not surprising that the flashy pinstriped suit worn by Kidman in the ad is now up for auction at a staggering price.
The Michael Kors fall/winter 2021 collection includes the Grey Wool and Cashmere Crystal Pinstripe Jumpsuit, which is currently valued at $5,000 to $10,000. This double-breasted jumpsuit, featured in Sothebys’ “Visions of America” series, pays homage to American craftsmanship and culture through a series of auctions, events, and experiences.
The New York headquarters of Sothebys will showcase their collection across three floors of gallery space. The collection includes a diverse range of items such as fine art, furniture, fashion, decorative arts, folk art, historic maps, books, whiskey, and manuscripts.
Thom Browne, a well-known fashion designer, is the curatorial partner for “Visions of America”. This event will have exhibitions open to the public starting from 12 January until 19 January, followed by auctions from 19 January until 29 January. The bidding for Kidman’s famous pinstripe suit will conclude on 23 January at 12:12 pm ET.
In September of 2021, the AMC Theatres advertisement aimed to entice individuals to return to movie theaters as the Covid-19 pandemic subsided. The ad featured an Oscar winner entering a vacant AMC theatre and sitting alone in the auditorium while Jurassic World played on the screen.
“We are drawn to this location for enchantment,” Kidman’s voiceover starts. “We come to AMC Theatres to experience laughter, tears, and empathy, because we all crave it. That unexplainable sensation that washes over us as the lights dim and we are transported to uncharted territories – not just for entertainment, but for a collective rejuvenation.”
She describes the stunning visuals on a large silver display and the tangible sound. In this setting, heartbreak somehow feels pleasurable, she remarks.
After that, the famous actress from Big Little Lies has become aware of the ad’s devoted fan base. At the previous year’s Academy Awards, she jokingly responded to host Jimmy Kimmel’s mention of the AMC commercial in his opening speech. Kimmel quipped, “I’m glad to see that Nicole Kidman has finally escaped from that deserted AMC. She has been held there for nearly two years. Welcome back, Nicole.”
“I appreciate your enthusiasm for motivating individuals who were already at the cinema to attend the movie,” he said, while Kidman and her spouse Keith Urban chuckled at the skit.
In October 2022, SNL comedian Chloe Fineman performed a spot-on parody of the AMC commercial. In the skit, a zealous audience echoes the slogan “heartbreak feels good in a place like this”, similar to the original ad. However, as the phrase is chanted, Fineman’s Kidman gains strength, her eyes shining and her body rising from her chair.
“What in the world just occurred?” quips former SNL cast member Kenan Thompson in the sketch.
