A portion of the expansive hunting property in South Carolina, where Alex Murdaugh committed the murder of his wife and son, is now up for sale again. The property is being auctioned online with a minimum bid of $1,100,000.
The Moselle Estate, located in Islandton, gained notoriety as a crime scene in June 2021 and has since drawn interest from the true crime community as a popular tourist destination.
On the night of June 7, 2021, a devastating double homicide occurred at a dog kennel on the property. Alex Murdaugh was responsible for fatally shooting his wife Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22. The tragic event caused great distress throughout the Lowcountry area.
The 21-acre property, which includes a custom-built house with 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, is up for online bidding. The previous owner was a convicted murderer, but the dog kennels where the crimes occurred are not part of the auction.
The auction will be concluded at 1pm on 15 February by J.P. King Auction Company and Crosby Land Company.
The entire property – which is 1,700 acres total – was initially sold in March 2023 to James A. Ayer and Jeffrey L. Godley for $3.9m. Proceeds went to Murdaugh’s surviving son Buster Murdaugh, who received $530,000 from the sale. The remainder went to legal fees and to benefit the victims of Murdaugh’s financial crimes.
The owners stated that they purchased the property for the purpose of hunting and farming, but mentioned they had no need for the Murdaugh family home, which serves as the primary residence on the Moselle Estate.
“According to the press release, Jeff Godley, who is a co-owner, mentioned that both the Ayer and Godley families own land in close proximity.”
“We purchased additional land for the purpose of expanding our hunting, farming, and timber operations. The purchased acreage also came with a home, but since we already have family homes, we are seeking a new neighbor to take advantage of this beautiful and meticulously constructed house. As a next-door neighbor, our own home is located about a mile away from this property.”
In October of 2023, the house was placed on the market once more, this time with a price tag of $1.95 million. As it is now back on the market, appointments must be made to view the home and potential buyers must have prior approval.
The description of the property states that it is a peaceful and private retreat, situated on open fields and featuring luxurious finishes throughout.
The listing describes a two-story entrance with heart pine floors and tongue and groove walls. A grand staircase leads to a mezzanine balcony. The foyer has vaulted ceilings that continue into the family room, which features custom built-ins, crown molding, and mahogany French doors opening onto a spacious back porch.
According to Todd Crosby of Crosby Land Company, the large floor layout has the potential to be transformed into either a weekend getaway or a company retreat that can accommodate up to 15 individuals. The 21-acre land features elevated terrain and fertile soil that is ideal for horse and dog training, as well as various outdoor activities.
The Islandton property is approximately a 90-minute car ride from Charleston, Savannah, Columbia, and Augusta.
The text does not mention the horrible killings that took place on the land approximately three years prior, bringing attention to the small town and resulting in a widely covered six-week trial in nearby Walterboro.
In July of 2022, Murdaugh was taken into custody and accused of two murders and two counts of possessing a weapon while committing a violent crime.
The individual, who is 54 years old, maintains his denial of murdering his family members, despite being convicted of all charges months ago.
The situation also received widespread recognition due to the family’s involvement in other unexplained deaths within the neighborhood, including that of their housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who passed away from a fall down the stairs at their residence in 2018.
Murdaugh is currently imprisoned for two life sentences due to the killings of his spouse and offspring. He has continuously refuted committing the crimes and is currently seeking to overturn his guilty verdict.
He has admitted to multiple financial offenses.
