The remarks made by Joey Barton regarding female football commentators and pundits have been labeled as “dangerous” by sports minister Stuart Andrew. He plans to address the matter with social media platforms.
Barton recently made numerous offensive remarks on the internet, specifically targeting ITV commentators Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward by comparing them to notorious criminals Fred and Rose West. This occurred on X, previously known as Twitter, after the channel covered Crystal Palace’s FA Cup match against Everton last Thursday.
ITV retaliated by characterizing Barton’s statements as “malicious”.
Julie Elliott, a member of the Labour MP and Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, asked Andrew if he would denounce the remarks. He replied affirmatively, saying, “Yes, I would.”
These comments encourage and invite abusive behavior, which is unacceptable.
I am cautious in situations where certain individuals seem to crave attention, and I do not want to contribute to that.
I would like to express my gratitude for the incredible impact that women and girls have on football and sports in general.
Elliott inquired if he would take action and address this matter with social media platforms like X and Meta, and Andrew responded: “I am willing to do so.”
