Australian authorities uncovered a criminal group that intended to unlawfully ship over hundreds of lizards valued at over £633,000 to Hong Kong.
A team of detectives from the Raptor squad in New South Wales were conducting an investigation into the unlawful export of indigenous animals and reptiles. During their operation, they discovered approximately 260 native lizards hidden in chip packets, handbags, and cereal containers that were being shipped from Sydney to Hong Kong.
In September of last year, the team formed Strike Force Whyaratta to investigate the illegal export of animals after nine packages containing 59 lizards were stopped while being transported to Hong Kong.
According to Detective Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis, authorities in Sydney have confiscated 257 lizards this week. Since the operation began on December 20th of last year, at least four individuals have been apprehended.
According to 9 News, a 41-year-old female was detained by authorities and accused of illegally exporting native species without a permit. On December 28th, a 54-year-old male was also arrested, followed by the arrest of a 59-year-old man the next day. The 59-year-old faces multiple charges, including leading a criminal group.
On January 5th, authorities arrested a 31-year-old man who was allegedly involved in the collection and capture of reptiles.
According to Mr. Koutsoufis, the criminal act was described as “cruel and heartless”. Fortunately, the reptiles that were trapped have been found alive and have been sent to local zoos and wildlife parks for health checks. The ultimate goal is to release them back into their natural habitat.
“The outcome is favorable for the animals and fortunately, the majority of them have survived their challenging journey.”
The superintendent stated that the 59-year-old was in charge of the group, while the 31-year-old would often venture into remote areas of the Northern Territory in western Australia to catch lizards and transport them to Sydney.
Mr. Koutsoufis stated that reptiles are highly sought after in the global market and are caught for various uses, such as being kept as pets or for their medicinal properties.
