PresidentDonald Trump is currently giving an address to a joint session of Congress, his first message to both chambers of the legislature since taking office for the second time.
The address arrives amid a contentious moment for the president after he enacted 25 percent sweeping Mexico andCanada,.
In excerpts of his remarks released ahead of time by the White House, Trump says he is “fighting every day” to lower prices for consumers in spite of the onset of the trade war and promised to tariff other countries what they tariff the U.S.
He also promises more mining of critical minerals, to expand energy production, and takes a victory lap about dramatically lowering illegal crossings at the border. Further to that he says he has sent a funding request to Congress to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.
The president also takes a jab at European allies, saying they spend more on Russian oil and gas than on defending Ukraine, while the U.S. carries the burden. Trump says he is working “tirelessly” to end the war.
There were protests from Democrats who held up signs and jeered falsehoods. Rep Al Green was removed by the Sergeant at Arms, while others walked out.
Trump turns to Ukraine and reads excerpts of Zelensky letter
As Ukraine is mentioned, Democrats wave Ukrainian flags
I am also working tirelessly to end the savage conflict in Ukraine. Millions of Ukrainians and Russians have been needlessly killed or wounded in this horrific and brutal conflict, with no end in sight. The United States has sent hundreds of billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s defense. Meanwhile, Europe has sadly spent more money buying Russian Oil and Gas than they have spent on defending Ukraine – by far! And Biden has authorized more money in this fight than Europe has spent.
He goes on to say that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent him a letter vowing that Ukraine is ready to sign a minerals deal “at any time and in any convenient format.”
“I appreciate that he sent this letter, just got it a little while ago. Simultaneously, we’ve had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace. Wouldn’t that be beautiful? ? It’s time to stop this madness. It’s time to halt the killing. It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides,” Trump says.

Trump announces office of shipbuilding in White House
Trump announces new Office of Shipbuilding in the White House.
Per the White House:
President Donald J Trump is prioritizing shipbuilding in America: commercial shipbuilding is virtually nonexistent right now.
In 2022, the U.S. had just five large oceangoing commercial ships on order, compared to China’s 1,794 and South Korea’s 734.
China is outproducing America in large commercial vessels 100-to-1.
There is only one full-service shipyard left on the entire West Coast.
The United States builds about 0.2% of the world’s tonnage of ships, while China, Korea, and Japan build over 90%.
Katie Hawkinson reports that Senator Bernie Sanders has walked out of the chamber, telling a reporter: “My speech will be better.”
