Kevin Sinfield successfully finished his most recent physically demanding fundraising endeavor to support individuals affected by motor neurone disease.
After completing seven ultra marathons in seven different cities in just seven days, the 43-year-old ex-rugby league player crossed the finish line on The Mall in London on Thursday afternoon to an enthusiastic reception. His motivation for this impressive feat was once again fueled by the news of his former teammate Rob Burrow’s battle with MND.
After a short while, he addressed the gathered audience, saying, “You are all aware of the purpose of our gathering. I hope we have conveyed the intended message. The MND community is a wonderful one and it requires all of us to continue the fight. The amount of awareness we have raised this week in honor of Rob has been immense once again.”
“Raising funds is crucial. We emphasized this morning the significance of monetary support as it will make a significant impact for us. It will ultimately lead us to finding a cure.”
“It is also the responsibility to ensure that families are properly cared for. If there is one thing our team wants you to take away from today, it is this.”
Sinfield and his colleagues hit the road once more to bring attention to MND and raise funds for five organizations that aid those impacted by the disease and their loved ones. They also aim to finance research for successful treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
Each leg covers a distance of 27 miles, equivalent to a typical marathon, but with an additional mile to symbolize the extra effort people can make to support their friends in need. The goal is to finish the marathon in less than four hours.
On Thursday, the team’s route went from Twickenham to Africa Gate on The Mall, passing through Hyde Park, Bond Street, Regent Street, Leicester Square, Tower Bridge, Parliament Square, and Trafalgar Square. Special guests, including former England cricketer Stuart Broad and Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood, joined them along the way.
The goal was to raise £777,777 to support 5,000 individuals who have been diagnosed with MND in the UK. Among them are Burrow, a former Gloucester and Leicester player, ex-professional footballers Marcus Stewart and Stephen Darby, and the late Doddie Weir. Weir passed away at the age of 52 in November of last year, six years after being diagnosed with MND, and continues to be a source of inspiration.
As Sinfield knelt down to tie his shoelaces, the amount had reached over £630,000, with an additional £94,000 pledged through Gift Aid.
The ex-Leeds Rhinos, England, and Great Britain rugby league player in the loose forward position is now the defense coach for England’s rugby union team. He has led a successful campaign that has collected over £8million so far.
He and his team departed from Twickenham at noon on Thursday after already finishing 27-mile routes in Leeds, Cardiff, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Dublin, and Brighton.
Before starting the last part of his difficult journey, Sinfield spoke on BBC Breakfast and said, “The most crucial aspect this week has been the attention it has brought, but as we have witnessed, it is the funds that will truly make a change.”
“Any extra resources or contributions are greatly appreciated as these individuals are in great need of our help.”
“We are able to run, but running alone cannot find a cure. It is through monetary donations that a cure can be discovered. If you are able to donate, please do so.”
The profits from Sinfield’s most recent project will primarily benefit the MND Association and the Leeds Hospitals Charity’s efforts to construct the Rob Burrow MND center in the city. Additionally, there will be contributions made to My Name’5 Doddie, the Irish MND Association, the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, and support for the 4ED campaign.
