Sergio Brown, a former NFL safety, entered a plea of not guilty for the charge of his mother’s death. This came nearly two months after his arrest in San Diego following a period of time in Mexico.
According to the Associated Press, Mr. Brown pleaded not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder and concealment of a dead body in October. These charges were related to the death of his 73-year-old mother, Myrtle Brown.
Mrs. Myrtle Brown, a 73-year-old resident of Maywood, Illinois, was discovered deceased on September 16th. She had been reported missing along with her son, Mr. Brown, just hours earlier. Her body was located near a nearby creek.
The office of the Cook County Medical Examiner concluded that her cause of death was blunt force trauma and it was classified as a homicide.
Mr. Brown recently made a request, several months after he confessed to taking some of his late mother’s possessions to Mexico. According to prosecutors, the former football player used his mother’s credit card in Mexico after her passing.
The prosecution claimed that there were similarities between the DNA samples found under Myrtle Brown’s fingernails and on a toothbrush in Mr. Brown’s bedroom. However, in October, Mr. Brown’s public defender, Robert Fox, pointed out the lack of witnesses and stated that there was no direct evidence, only circumstantial evidence.
After his mother passed away, a chaotic search began for the ex-Patriot, Mr. Brown. He shared peculiar videos on Instagram, appearing to ridicule his mother’s death by labeling it as “fake news” and alluding to “Finding Nemo.”
The police were able to track down the ex-NFL player in Mexico, as they suspected that one of his videos was recorded in Playa del Carmen. TMZ also shared a video showing a man, who seemed to be Mr. Brown, dancing and buying drinks for others at a club in Tulum.
During the search for him, a resident of Myrtle Brown’s neighborhood informed WBBM that they possessed a Ring doorbell recording that was given to authorities, displaying Mr. Brown burning his mother’s clothing. The neighbor also mentioned that, leading up to his mother’s passing, the former NFL player had been exhibiting unusual behavior: “They stated that he had not been acting like himself in the last few months and seemed to be mentally unstable.”
Mr. Brown is expected to make his next court appearance on January 24th.
