Eddie Howe refuted speculations that Newcastle United have begun inquiring about a new goalkeeper to take over for Nick Pope, but did not dismiss the idea of a potential replacement in January.
Newcastle’s injury woes worsened following their impressive 1-0 victory against Manchester United at home last weekend. The team’s first-choice goalkeeper, Pope, was forced to leave the game late on due to a severe shoulder injury.
The team has officially announced that the 31-year-old player will require surgery, resulting in a four-month absence from the field. According to sources, the Magpies have already started searching for a new goalkeeper, as the January transfer window is approaching in less than a month.
David de Gea and Aaron Ramsdale are both rumored to be potential transfers to St James’s Park. While Newcastle manager Howe stated that there have been no official offers, he did not completely dismiss the possibility of a move in January.
“I have observed numerous media headlines and speculations about goalkeepers and other players,” stated Howe during a press conference prior to their match against Everton. “We have not initiated any inquiries for the January transfer window in any position. If that were the case, we would be seeking new players for every position due to the injuries in our squad.”
“Hopefully, this will change by January. It presents an opportunity for our goalkeepers to solidify their positions.”
It is probable that Martin Dubravka will take over for Pope as goalkeeper, but Howe’s squad is facing challenges due to the Englishman’s injury during the busy holiday season. Newcastle has seven matches remaining in December, including important games against Milan in the Champions League and a quarter-final match against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Currently, the team has 13 players missing, but Howe commended the determination and mindset of those who are still able to play.
