Bakeries aren’t usually found at cruising altitude but one Ryanair flight attendant decided to bring his cooking skills to the cabin in a video that has gone viral.
On Instagram, Miguel Vasconcelos, dressed in his full uniform, can be observed making a cake from scratch in the kitchen onboard one of the planes operated by a low-cost airline.
Starting with a base of chocolate cake, he proceeds to break eggs, confessing, “I feel silly.” Next, he incorporates oil, water, and chocolate chips into the mixing bowl, stirring everything together. Finally, a colleague adds even more chocolate to the mix.
The video concludes with him requesting suggestions for his next baking project.
Many of the comments on the video, which has been viewed more than 1 million times at the time of writing, are positive, with some joking about Ryanair’s notorious no-frills approach.
A person wrote: “The passengers can smell baking coming from the galley. No, it’s not for you, family.”
Someone else remarked, “I believe it was the sole occasion that passengers of Ryanair were treated to a complimentary onboard performance.”
Some individuals, on the other hand, expressed their disapproval of Mr. Vasconcelos, claiming that he violated health and safety regulations or neglected the well-being of his fellow passengers.
Someone stated that there was “no service for the guests,” to which the flight attendant responded, “Trust me, if we were bored enough to bake a cake during a long flight, we definitely provided at least two drink and snack services, and possibly even more. We also served hot food, gave out gifts, and offered scratch cards.”
Mr. Vasconcelos was involved in a back-and-forth conversation after responding to a comment that criticized his actions and accused him of violating on-board safety protocols, stating that individuals like him devalue the job of the cabin crew.
In reply to the unfavorable comments, a user on Instagram stated: “Promoting the brand and spreading joy! Congratulations… There are too many overly critical people in the world nowadays. I just wish you were on my flight a few weeks ago.”
The Independent has reached out to Ryanair and Mr. Vasconcelos for a response.
