Lewis Miley, a teenager, has been instructed to prepare for a significant position in Newcastle United’s midfield as they strive to persevere on multiple fronts during a time of injury troubles.
The 17-year-old put on a remarkable performance in his first home game in the Premier League on Saturday, contributing to the Magpies’ 4-1 victory over Chelsea. This came after Joe Willock suffered a setback with his Achilles and joined a long list of injured players.
Willock may be out of action for an extended period as he awaits guidance from a specialist on the next steps. With upcoming matches against Paris St Germain in the Champions League and a visit to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, Bournemouth will have a busy schedule leading up to New Year’s Day, making Miley a key player for the team.
When asked about his performance in the game against the Blues, Howe commented that it was overall very strong. He mentioned that the player demonstrated the same poise and skill that was evident during pre-season, where he had a successful run. Howe believes that this player will play a crucial role for the team in the upcoming weeks.
“He will need to rise to the occasion and showcase his capabilities.”
Miley made a valuable contribution to the first goal by delivering a precise pass that enabled Alexander Isak to turn and score just 13 minutes into his return from a month-long absence due to a groin injury.
Howe commented: “That pass truly reflects his character. Being so young and making your debut at home can be overwhelming, but he maintained his composure and resisted the urge to shoot. Instead, he showed great ability in finding Alex, resulting in a fantastic pass and finish.”
He behaves differently than what is expected of a typical 17-year-old.
Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle, is eager to add more players to his team for increased depth.
Raheem Sterling equalized with a skillfully taken free-kick in the 23rd minute, however, Newcastle’s captain Jamaal Lascelles, who had initially caused the mistake leading to the set-piece, redeemed himself with a powerful header in the 60th minute. Anthony Gordon finished off the scoring after defender Reece James received his second yellow card, but Miley’s performance was a notable highlight on a day when manager Howe had to deal with the absence of 13 senior players and included three goalkeepers on the bench.
When asked if it was difficult to remember that he is just 17 years old, the head coach responded by saying that it is easy to forget due to his height and appearance of maturity. He does not act like a typical teenager.
“It is imperative that we keep in mind his youth and take steps to safeguard him. It is my responsibility to guide and instruct him both on and off the field.”
“He hails from a respectable family who sets limits for him to prevent him from going overboard. We are both focused on the upcoming match.”
Pochettino was not pleased with the manner in which his inexperienced Chelsea squad surrendered on Tyneside, blaming them for delivering a lackluster performance.
He expressed the importance of our team displaying a new level of energy and competitiveness. This, for him, is the crucial factor.
