While millions of tourists flock to Spain during the summer, not many will think of visiting this region for a winter vacation.
Winter sun destinations in the Caribbean, South America, or Asia often grab the spotlight, but Spain’s warm climate and lack of summer crowds make it the top short-haul option for savvy travelers.
During the winter months, the southern regions of the country experience temperatures that typically stay around 20C. Popular destinations such as Seville in Andalusia continue to have plenty of sunshine from December to March, but with cooler temperatures that make it more pleasant to explore without the worry of extreme heat affecting your activities.
Valencia, located on the eastern coast, provides options for beach strolls from Christmas Eve until spring. While the Canary Islands are well-known for their warm winter temperatures in the mid-20s, there are other popular winter sun destinations in Spain to consider. Please continue reading for a list of some of these destinations.
Tenerife, located in the Canary Islands, is known as the top winter sun destination in Spain. Despite its reputation as a popular summer spot, this island receives six hours of sunshine daily from December to February, with average temperatures around 18C (and highs of 22C).
The island boasts numerous natural attractions, including Spain’s tallest mountain, Mount Teide. This active volcano stands tall over the national park of the same name. Although a cable car is available for reaching the summit, there are also various hiking trails among the striking red rocks and rough landscape.
If you’re not interested in exploring, don’t worry – the weather is still suitable for a day at the beach. You can enjoy water sports at the coastal resorts of Costa Adeje or explore the capital, Santa Cruz, before relaxing on Playa Teresitas.

To experience the epitome of child-free indulgence and tranquility, visit the western coast and stay at the Red Level in Gran Melia Palacio de Isora. This exclusive area within the larger Gran Melia Palacio offers private terraces and scenic views in every room. Guests can enjoy a pool, hot tubs, and a serene atmosphere.

Valencia may not be as warm as other destinations on this list, but it still boasts comfortable temperatures and abundant sunshine during the winter months. Despite temperatures averaging at around 17C, it is not unusual to spot locals enjoying the beach from December to February. However, some may choose to refrain from swimming in the water during this time.
During winter, this city flourishes as its top attractions and beloved pastimes are better suited for cooler weather. Taking a bike ride along the approximately five-mile stretch of Turia Park is a must-do experience, leading to the City of Arts and Sciences, a modern wonder of Spain featuring avant-garde architecture, lush gardens, and the largest aquarium in Europe.
If you are taking a leisurely walk through Ruzafa and Carmen or sipping on some outdoor New Year’s Eve drinks, the weather is typically pleasant and not overly hot or cold. While the beach may not be ideal for swimming, it is perfect for a relaxing stroll and enjoying lunch on the shore while your friends in the UK are dealing with snowy driveways.
