Kieran Trippier has been a part of Gareth Southgate’s England team for a long time, but with the high level of competition at full-back, he is not assuming he will automatically be chosen for Euro 2024.
The defender from Newcastle is currently one of the experienced members of Southgate’s team and has earned a total of 46 appearances so far.
He scored his sole senior goal during the 2018 World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia. His versatility to play on either side of Southgate’s defense has helped him maintain a spot in the team since then.
Although he has consistently performed well for his club and national team, Trippier is now facing tough competition from a talented group of full-backs in England.
Lately, Kyle Walker, Reece James, and Ben White have filled the position of right-back, alongside the equally adaptable Trent Alexander-Arnold and Rico Lewis. On the left, Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell, and Levi Colwill have been active.
He stated that his priority is to continue performing effectively for his club before considering any decisions about Euro 2024 selection.
At present, there is a plethora of talented full-backs in England. Therefore, it is important for me to concentrate on my own abilities and performance. While I aspire to be among them, I understand that I must consistently perform at a top level in order to achieve success.
I have always had confidence in my abilities. Throughout my career, I have faced challenges. I have consistently competed against skilled right-backs for several years, and it all comes down to having faith in oneself.
“I believe the expectations for full-backs in today’s game are incredibly high. They are required to push forward and provide overlaps, but also must still prioritize defending.”
I believe that full-backs carry a significant burden in the way we approach playing in the Premier League currently.
“I believe there is a wealth of talent among the English full-backs.”
Since becoming manager in 2016, Southgate has shown a strong belief in young players. Trippier, who is now one of the more experienced players on the current team, is joined by 33-year-olds Walker and Jordan Henderson.
Trippier knows that even with changes made by Southgate, leadership is not always based on age. He hopes to have a fresh start when England plays against North Macedonia in their last Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday night.

“It feels like just yesterday when I first arrived at camp, surrounded by experienced players like Gary Cahill and Joe Hart,” he remarked.
Looking back, I am now one of the most experienced players, demonstrating how swiftly time passes in football.
Although I am among the oldest members, there are many leaders in this room and numerous players performing exceptionally well.
